Delivery Hero – An Amazing Startup Funding Story

Startups in continental Europe are often at a disadvantage in scaling their business due to a lack of funding: in comparison to the US, venture capital is still relative hard to get by.

This in turn makes it hard for European founders to think big and to aggressively pursue international expansion.

That’s why I find the story of Delivery Hero so encouraging:

Delivery Hero is a network of online food ordering services that is headquartered in Berlin and operates in 12 countries around the world. Companies in the Delivery Hero network are “… building the future of online food ordering … (customers) can easily find their favorite dish through thousands of online menu cards. Orders as well as payments can conveniently be placed online and restaurants are peer-reviewed.”

The network originates from lieferheld.de, which launched in Germany in November 2010, less than two years ago. In just 21 months, lieferheld.de evolved into the Delivery Hero network, raised 80 million € in venture funding, and used its substantial funds to drive an aggressive international expansion, mostly through M&A.
